The presentation was organized by JTB through the Ministry of Foreisng Affairs Japan on February 10, 2020
JENESYS2019 is a people-to-people exchange program between Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. The main objectives are;
- To promote mutual trust and understanding among the peoples of Japan and the Asia-Pacific region, and to build a basis for future friendship and cooperation.
- To encourage an understanding of Japan’s economy, society, history, diverse culture, politics and diplomatic relations.
The program was held for 10 days and included field trip to Kyoto.
During the program, students from East Asia;
- Attend lectures about Japanese politics, economics, society, history, culture, and diplomatic relations to promote a better understanding of Japan.
- Visit educational sites and institutions, high-tech and traditional industries, world heritage sites, provincial government office; and participating in cross-cultural events, workshops, and discussions with local people.
- Participate in hands-on learning experience such as home-stays or home-visits, and cultural arts events.
- Convey information about Japan’s attractions through reporting sessions or Social Networking Services during / after the program.
RSOAP was invited to provide a presentation on Sustainable Tourism as one of the topics for the 10 day program was ‘Overtourism & Sustainable Tourism Development’. Ms Alcinda Trawen provided a presentation with group activities for 1.5 hours. She introduced UNWTO/ RSOAP and latest global tourism Statistics. With a focus on tourism and sustainable development, especially the work of UNWTO in SDGs, International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO) and sustainable tourism policies from Member Countries.
During the presentations three group activities were also undertaken for interactive participation. Firstly on utilizing the UNWTO SDG online platform, secondly about INSTO focal areas and last activity was on overtourism mitigation actions.
The last activity correlated to the field trip to Kyoto which is very popular destination facing issues of overtourism.
32 students from 12 countries in East Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, Viet Nam and Japan)
