The 4th version of the workshop was co-organized by the UNWTO Regional Support Office for Asia and the Pacific (UNWTO RSOAP) with the Kyoto University for Foreign Studies (KUFS) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with the theme: Sustainable Tourism in the Post-COVID World. The lectures focused on insights into the future of tourism and its contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the effects of tourism in the community, and the value of virtual tours that ties strong storytelling with immersive technology.
Together with the UNWTO RSOAP, KUFS, and JICA, participating universities in the Heritage Tourism Research Project (HTRP) also presented their case studies on the effects of COVID-19 on communities and festivals:

- Hanoi University: Impact of COVID-19 on traditional culture: A story of Tet celebration in Vietnam
- Kyoto University of Foreign Studies: Community Engagement as a Form of Sustainable Tourism: Student Experiences and Community Responses
- University of Science Malaysia: Survival of Micro Business and Tour Guides in Post-covid World: Case of George Town Penang and Perhentian Island Malaysia
This year’s workshop also had a session on creating virtual tours through the MyHometown Platform led by Professor Eric Hawkinson from the Kyoto University of Foreign Studies. The workshop sessions allowed participants to build virtual tours of a destination from their hometowns in China, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
Overall positive feedback from the students who participated in the certificate course programs will be used to design the next Future Tourism Leaders Workshop program.
